White fillings

What are white (composite) fillings?

White fillings are made from a high-quality composite resin that’s colour-matched to your teeth. They are designed to repair cavities, chips, or worn areas, restoring both the strength and appearance of your tooth. Unlike older silver amalgam fillings, composite fillings are virtually invisible and blend seamlessly into your natural smile.

When might I need a filling?

Fillings are used to restore teeth affected by decay, cracks, or minor fractures. Common signs you may need a filling include:

  • Sensitivity to temperature or sweetness.
  • Pain or discomfort when biting or chewing.
  • Visible holes or dark spots on a tooth.

Sometimes, early signs of decay are only picked up during a dental check-up. That’s why we recommend regular examinations to help catch problems early, before they become more serious.

Why we recommend white fillings

At Marton Dental Practice, white fillings are our standard choice for most patients. They are:

  • Discreet and natural-looking.
  • Durable and long-lasting with proper care.
  • Minimally invasive, preserving more of your healthy tooth.
  • Mercury-free.

If you have existing metal (amalgam) fillings and would prefer a more natural look, we also offer a safe amalgam removal and replacement service. Many patients choose to update their smile with tooth-coloured fillings for a more confident appearance.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Why would I replace a silver filling?

Most people do it for appearance, particularly when a dark filling shows when they laugh. There are clinical reasons too - older amalgam fillings can be large, worn, or have cracks running from them, and the tooth around them can weaken over years of expansion and contraction. We'll tell you honestly whether yours needs replacing or is fine left alone.

Are my amalgam fillings dangerous?

UK and European regulators consider amalgam safe for the general population, though its use is being phased down for environmental reasons. We don't recommend removing sound amalgam fillings on health grounds. If you'd like them changed for how they look, that's a perfectly good reason, and we're happy to do it.

How much does it cost?

Replacing a silver filling with a white one starts from £145, and new white fillings start from £99. The cost depends on the size of the filling and which tooth it's in. Denplan Essentials members get 15% off. See the fees page for the full list.

Do white fillings last as long as silver ones?

Modern composites are strong and, on most teeth, last comparably well. On very large fillings in back teeth taking heavy bite force, a crown or an onlay is often the more durable answer than a very large white filling, and we'll say so rather than doing something that will need redoing.

Can it be done in one visit?

Yes, in most cases. We remove the old filling, clean the tooth, check whether there's decay or a crack underneath, and rebuild it in the same appointment. Occasionally what we find underneath means the tooth needs something more, in which case we'll stop, explain and agree the plan with you before going further.

Will my tooth be sensitive afterwards?

It can be for a week or two, particularly to cold, and particularly if the filling was deep. That normally settles by itself. If it's still sensitive after a few weeks, or it hurts to bite on, ring us and we'll check it.

Treatment Timeline

Step 1

The white filling process

Getting a white filling is a straightforward and comfortable experience:

  • We gently numb the area to ensure you feel no discomfort.
  • Any damaged or decayed tooth material is carefully removed.
  • The composite resin is precisely applied and shaped to match your tooth.
  • A special light is used to harden the filling, creating a strong bond.
  • We finish by polishing the tooth for a smooth, natural result.
