Managing gum disease in Middlesbrough and Teesside.

Gum disease is one of the most common – and often overlooked – oral health problems in the UK. At Marton Dental Practice, we’re committed to helping patients across Middlesbrough and Teesside prevent, detect, and manage gum disease at every stage.

What is gum disease?

Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, affects the tissues that support your teeth. It often develops silently, with many people unaware of its presence in the early stages. That’s why regular dental check-ups and hygiene appointments are so important – our experienced team can spot the subtle signs of gum disease before they progress. If left untreated, gum disease can cause more serious issues such as gum recession, persistent infection, and even tooth loss. Early intervention is key to protecting your smile.

What causes gum disease?

The primary cause of gum disease is the build-up of plaque – a sticky film of bacteria – around the teeth and gums. Plaque can be especially difficult to remove from hard-to-clean areas, such as around dental work, braces, or dentures. Other risk factors include:

  • Smoking or tobacco use.
  • Diabetes or other conditions affecting your immune system.
  • Poor oral hygiene habits.

Our team at Marton Dental Practice, serving Middlesbrough and Teesside, can help you manage these risks and keep your gums healthy.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What are the signs of gum disease?

Bleeding when you brush or floss, red or puffy gums, persistent bad breath, gums that are shrinking back from the teeth, sensitivity around the gum line, and in the later stages teeth that feel loose or have started to move. It's often painless until it's advanced, which is exactly why the routine check-up matters.

Can gum disease be cured?

The early stage, gingivitis, can be fully reversed with proper cleaning at home and professional cleaning here. The later stage, periodontitis, involves bone loss that we can't grow back - but it can absolutely be stabilised and stopped from getting worse. The earlier you come in, the more we can undo.

What does treatment involve?

Careful cleaning below the gum line to remove the deposits your toothbrush can't reach, spread over one or more longer appointments, plus time spent showing you what to change at home. That second part does most of the heavy lifting - we can clean your gums, but it's what happens between appointments that keeps them healthy.

How much does it cost?

Hygiene appointments start from £69, and more involved gum treatment is quoted after we've assessed how far things have progressed and measured around each tooth. Denplan Essentials members get 15% off treatment and two hygiene visits included. We'll always give you the plan and the cost in writing first.

Am I going to lose my teeth?

Not necessarily, and not usually if you act on it. Teeth are lost when gum disease runs unchecked for years, not when it's picked up and managed. Once we've measured your gums we can tell you honestly where you stand and what the outlook is for each tooth.

Does smoking really make that much difference?

Yes, more than most people expect. Smoking reduces the blood supply to your gums, which both accelerates the damage and masks the bleeding that would otherwise warn you something's wrong. Diabetes, stress and some medications also affect gum health, so we'll ask about all of it.
