The area is fully numbed, so you'll feel firm pressure and movement but not sharpness. We check you're properly numb before we start and we'll stop if you're not comfortable. Afterwards you'll be sore for a few days, which ordinary painkillers manage well.

The socket closes over within a week or two and most people feel back to normal within a few days. Avoid rinsing for the first 24 hours, keep away from smoking and hot drinks initially, and don't poke at it. If the pain gets worse after three or four days rather than better, ring us - that can be a dry socket and it's easily treated.

We do, in most cases. Omar holds a diploma in primary care oral surgery and takes referrals for surgical extractions from other practices. Very difficult or deeply impacted wisdom teeth are better handled in a hospital setting, and we'll tell you straight away if yours falls into that category rather than starting something we should have referred.

For a simple extraction, most people carry on with their day, though you'll be numb for a few hours. For a surgical extraction, it's sensible to keep the rest of the day clear and avoid anything strenuous for 24 to 48 hours. Book an appointment later in the day if you'd rather not go back to the office.

That's worth deciding before the tooth comes out rather than after. Depending on where it is, you may not need to replace it at all - or an implant, bridge or denture may be the sensible next step. We'll talk it through as part of your plan.
