We love working with families to support the health of children’s teeth in their early years, and into their teens and adulthood.

Our relaxed dentists are highly experienced in working with children, creating relationships based on respect, trust, and inspiring them to take care of their teeth for years to come.

Your child’s first check-up

We recommend bringing your child in to see us when their first tooth comes through. Their dentist will carry out a short and basic examination of their teeth. It’s important to let you know that it’s very common for children not to allow the dentist to examine them.

Therefore, their early appointments are much more about getting them accustomed to the dental practice environment.

Their early appointments are also paramount for helping them to build confidence and prevent the emergence of anxieties associated with visiting the dentist.

Our dentists are acutely aware of how dental anxiety can prevent children from visiting the dentist as adults, and we place significant emphasis on their comfort, well-being, and helping them to feel safe in their surroundings.

Dentistry for Children

Supporting you and your child.

We know dentist visits with young children can be tough, as can encouraging them to stick to a healthy brushing routine at home.

Our dentists are highly empathetic to the struggles parents and guardians face, and can offer guidance on how to help your child with their brushing at each stage of their lives.

Children's Dentistry

What treatments can we offer your child?

During your child’s check-ups, our dentists will:

  • Examine their teeth and soft tissues (gums and tongue).
  • Make sure their teeth are coming through without any structural anomalies.
  • Take the following steps if orthodontic treatment is required (the optimal age for braces is between 9 and 15).

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

When should my child first see a dentist?

As soon as their first tooth appears, or by their first birthday at the latest. Those early visits aren't really about treatment - they're about your child sitting in the chair, having a ride up and down, and learning that the dentist is a normal, unthreatening place. Children who start early tend to grow into adults who don't dread appointments.

Is dental treatment free for children?

NHS dental care is free for under-18s, and we're able to see children under our NHS contract free of charge when a parent joins us on Denplan. It's one of the reasons a lot of local families register with us together. Give us a ring and we'll explain how it works for your family.

My child is terrified of the dentist. What do you do?

We go at their pace. First visits are often just a look and a count, with nothing else attempted, and we build from there over several appointments if that's what it takes. We explain things in words they understand, we never spring anything on them, and we're happy for you to bring them along to your own appointment first so they can see there's nothing to it.

How often should children have a check-up?

Usually every six months, though some children need to be seen more often - particularly during the years when adult teeth are coming through, or if they're prone to decay. We'll tell you what's right for your child rather than applying the same interval to everyone.

How do I stop my child getting fillings?

Brushing twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste, supervised until they're around seven, and keeping sugary food and drink to mealtimes does most of the work. We'll also apply preventive treatments where they're suitable and go through diet with you honestly - it's very often the drinks between meals rather than sweets that cause the damage.

My child's teeth are crooked. When should we look at braces?

It's usually worth an assessment around age 11 to 13, once most of the adult teeth are through. We'll tell you if it's something to watch, something we can help with, or something better handled elsewhere. Older teenagers often ask about clear aligners rather than fixed braces, and we're happy to talk that through too.
